Conserving Canada’s Wetlands

Territory (AOY) by Joseph Koensgen

Joseph Koensgen is a Canadian artist and naturalist. His keen interest in nature, combined with his artistic talent meant that from a young age, he was usually drawing and painting the natural world he saw around him. Being self taught, he started to paint wildlife in acrylics at the age of 15, studying the art of his favourite wildlife painters and continuing to develop his skill. In 2008, he moved into painting the realistic nature scenes that he does today. His inspiration comes directly from nature and he is often going out with a camera to capture the things he sees. His passion for conservation is a large part of why he paints, and he hopes that his paintings will inspire the same in everyone who sees his art.

Having had many sightings throughout my life, I had thought about a large painting of a moose for quite some time. However, the proper setting seemed to elude me, as I had gone through many ideas and it was challenging to think of something that would work well as a large painting. It wasn't until a cool morning out in the Manitoba wilderness that I came upon this scene of a marsh full of mist being lit up by the early morning sun. The moose was the perfect complement to this scene as it stands out bold in the hazy morning light.
